It is the synthesis of all numbers.
It is thought, word and deed.
It is the past, present and future.
It is the beginning, the middle and the end.
It is heaven, earth and waters.
It is mineral, vegetable and animal.
It is mind, body and spirit.
It is art, science and religion.
It is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
It is the number three. The idea of the trinity has existed since the beginning of time. It is understood to be the key to the interdependence of all existence. As this long year draws to a close, in this holy season of comfort and joy, I thought it best to offer not one Christmas story, but three. Too many are suffering a loss of some kind and could thus benefit from more than the usual gift of one historical tale. As QI’s gift to you, I give you a perfect triad of historical cheer that you can, in turn, share with your family and friends.
I’ll not take credit for any of these three. My dear friend and mentor, Arthur Cashin, shared both the first and last stories in today’s special Quill. The third came from the gifted Highland Park Presbyterian Church Senior Pastor Bryan Dunagan whose sermons never fail to inspire me.
